Last weekend on the Mangatutu
You can't catch trout if you don't have a fly in the water
It’s a beautiful evening and you don’t need to guess. Rain is forecast over the next few days. To reply to Marks first comment. The Puniu is yet to clear from the storm in early August. The water level is dropping and IF the rainfall is minimal over the weekend the season should be well under way. The Mangatutu has cleared and some great fishing is there for the taking. Yes the water above the Wharepuhanga Bridge does suffer form fishing pressure as the season progresses. The fish get pushed further up stream but, there is plenty of fishing water in the lower and middle reaches. I spent some time in these areas last season and was never disappointed.

Opening Day
Opening day tomorrow
The drought has broken. Three days without rain was almost too much to handle.
Hamilton Anglers Club
It is an absolute beautiful spring evening. When I arrived home tonight, Molley who had been cooped up all day and was in need of a run and for once the weather was great. Who needs an excess for a fish? As soon as she spotted the rod her tail was up and you get THAT look. Let’s go. The river was still very full. At least my golden retriever (trout dog) enjoyed the trip down to the river, and well I enjoy the time, river full or not.
New BlogEntry
It’s Sunday afternoon and don’t tell anyone, but it is not raining. Daylight saving has me confused, but the sky is bluish and there is definitely no rain. (Wendy doesn’t change her watch, so she is never too sure just what the time is…..blonde??) Well, Colin Shepherd and I went fishing last weekend, we were not going to be put off by what seemed like 100km winds and a roaring river, we were warriors about to tackle those trout that were already wet and were waiting for us, just below the surface of the some what chocolate coloured Puniu River.
Spring in the Waikato
Back on line
It’s great to be back. A couple of days down hit with a spam problem, all sorted and back on line. Of course we may be back but so is the ever persistent rain. After two days of fairly settled weather we are been drenched again. Just when the river levels and flow rates are beginning to come look like anything close to a comfortable fishing condition down the comes the rain again.
